Following up on our previous posts regarding HB37 the bill preventing private postsecondary institutions in this state from adopting sanctuary policies providing a refuge for immigrants. This bill would remove all federal pass thru and state funding, including students losing access to the Hope Scholarship and Tuition Equalization Grants, from private universities such as our partners Agnes Scott and Emory.
Our post this past Monday asked you to contact the Senate Higher Education Committee in time for their committee meeting but unfortunately the bill passed through committee and now goes to the full senate for a vote.
Please take a moment to let the committee know you are disappointed in their passing the bill through committee and to vote against it on the floor.
Please contact the members of the committee with an email. In the “to” column cut and paste:
Fran.Millar@senate.ga.gov; firstname.lastname@example.org; email@example.com; Brandon.Beach@senate.ga.gov; Chuck.Hufstetler@senate.ga.gov; firstname.lastname@example.org; Burt.Jones@senate.ga.gov; email@example.com; Bruce.Thompson@senate.ga.gov; Donna.Nealey@senate.ga.gov
And in the “cc” column add your State Senator (if not on the committee) and a subject line of “HB37”:
Members of the Senate Higher Education Committee,
I am disappointed to see the anti-immigrant bill HB37 pass favorably through your committee. HB37, goes to great lengths to ensure Georgia is viewed as an unwelcoming state and will have detrimental effects on our colleges, universities and students.
I welcome all newcomers, including refugees and immigrants, to Georgia and to my community and expect the state legislature to reflect those same ideals.
Please do what you can to not give HB37 a floor vote and vote No if it is voted upon.

After calling send an email to Lt. Governor Cagle with the following (or a personal version of it) and drop down topic of “Legislation”. Also feel free to leave blank or add your organization and relationship to organization. And do not click the button declining a response. If you get a response feel free to add it to the comments on this page.
Lt. Governor Cagle,
Please hold HB37 without further action and publicly take a stand in vocal opposition to all current and forthcoming anti-immigration bills. HB37 and bills like it are an anathema to Georgia’s founding and our longstanding reputation for hospitality. I welcome all newcomers, including refugees and immigrants, to Georgia and to my community and expect your office to reflect those same ideals.
